Crockett Grocery

 Great Wings!

This will be a brief take on "hot wings" that I had recently. They came from one of the most unlikely places in the Bluff City, a convenience store in North Memphis. Crockett Grocery has been around for as long as I can remember, although I never considered it a place to get "take out" food. The reason that the store got on my radar was through food delivery apps like Uber Eats that connects restaurants and customers looking for convenience in dining experience. Initially, I would only get Chinese food from the store but I gave the place another look when I wanted hot wings. At first, I attempted to get my wings from my favorite go-to place on a Saturday afternoon (Hugstables) but the bar was either closed or not taking to-go orders. With that restaurant unavailable, I decided to go with whatever Midtown or North Memphis restaurant that was close to my home. After considering places such as Best Wings of Memphis and Crumpy's, I decided to give Crockett Grocery a try. My decision was based on past experiences where I got prompt deliveries without any problems. I didn't expect much other than tasty chicken wings with distinguishing "Buffalo" flavor. To my surprise, Crockett Grocery brought something uniquely special to its wings.

Hot Wings from Crockett Grocery in Memphis, Tennessee

The hot wings at Crockett Grocery are a fusion of "Sweet & Spicy" and peppery flavors. The wings' sauce brings the heat with a sweet flair in a way that is extremely satisfying. The eight-piece wing combo comes with fries that make for a great satisfying light meal that should get you though the day. In a way, I'm glad that I found a new place for wings that's more than ordinary. For those looking for something more substantive, I suggest getting Crockett's wings along with a either a Chinese entrée or "side" items like egg rolls and/or dumplings (for the "apps", side items are options on DoorDash but not Uber Eats or Postmates). Compared to the wings, I never found any of the convenience store's Chinese offerings as anything beyond ordinary, although it fills in a pinch when you need food on the cheap. Still, I recommend it if you can mix it with Crockett Grocery's amazing hot wings.

SIDE NOTE: Even though the wings are mostly covered in sauce, sometimes a wing or two is missed (an issue that's easily resolvable by dipping the wings in the excess sauce at the bottom of the takeout container). As mere fried chicken wings, they are decent enough to hold its own with restaurants like Jack Pirtle's and Riko's. On Uber Eats' menu for the store, that option is either "Plain" or "Seasoned." I recommend calling ahead to confirm what the un-sauced wings are before ordering (I will look into this myself and update this review soon). By the way, other wing flavors are "BBQ", "Honey Gold" and "Lemon Pepper" that are found in most wing joints although I'm curious if "Crockett" has put it's own spin on them like it has with its "Hot" wings. It will be interesting to see what happens.

As I mentioned, you can get the wings either in person or through food delivery apps like Uber Eats. Give the wings a try for what I believe will be a great experience.
